FortiNet Launches FortiGate(TM) 800 Antivirus Firewall

The FortiGate 800 provides a new entry-level gigabit platform with 'tri-speed' interfaces that support 10Mbps, 100Mbps as well as Gigabit Ethernet networks.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fortinet -- the only provider of ASIC-powered, network-based antivirus firewall systems for real-time network protection -- today announced the FortiGate 800 Antivirus Firewall, the 11th member of the award-winning FortiGate family. The FortiGate 800 provides a new entry-level gigabit platform with 'tri-speed' interfaces that support 10Mbps, 100Mbps as well as Gigabit Ethernet networks, which ensures a built-in, cost-effective upgrade path for the many organizations that are migrating from 10/100 to 1000 megabits/second (gigabit) networks.

The number of gigabit Ethernet ports shipped is growing rapidly, driven by the need for higher bandwidth to support voice, video and other high-bandwidth applications and the plummeting costs of high-speed networking hardware. However, while the price premium paid for gigabit networking devices -- such as network interface cards and switches -- is diminishing relative to 10/100 Mbps equipment, security devices with gigabit interfaces still carry a high premium relative to their 10/100 Mbps counterparts. As a result, most organizations delay the purchase of gigabit-capable security devices until the time that they upgrade their internal networks. Organizations that are installing 10/100 Mbps security equipment today will therefore need to replace those devices with gigabit-interface security systems when they upgrade their internal networks.

The FortiGate model 800 includes 4 "tri-speed" Ethernet ports, each of which supports 10/100 Mbps and can also support gigabit speeds with no change in hardware. Customers can use the FortiGate 800 model today in their existing 10/100 networks, and will be continue to use the FortiGate 800 in the future as they upgrade their networks to gigabit speeds, reducing their migration costs and eliminating unnecessary replacement of network security systems.

"Fortinet is making it much easier for customers to deploy gigabit security in their networks," said Brian Burke, research manager at IDC. "Coupled with its competitive pricing for gigabit security, Fortinet's FG800 is compelling because it integrates firewall, VPN, content inspection, antivirus, and intrusion detection/prevention into a single security platform."

FortiGate 800 Provides Performance, Flexibility Advantages

The FortiGate 800 Antivirus Firewall provides the performance, flexibility and security necessary to protect today's most demanding large enterprise networks. The FortiGate 800 can be deployed as a high performance antivirus and content filtering gateway, or as a complete network protection solution leveraging firewall, VPN and intrusion detection/prevention (IDP) capabilities.

The FortiGate 800 Antivirus Firewall features a total of 8 ports, four of which are 10/100/1000 tri-speed Ethernet ports plus four user-definable 10/100 ports. Multi-zone capabilities provide granular security by group or department, allowing administrators to segment their network into zones and create policies between zones. A high availability port allows two or more FortiGate 800 Antivirus Firewalls to be configured in redundant clusters for improved scalability and uptime.

The FortiGate 800's key attributes include:

  • Firewall throughput of 600 Mbps
  • 400,000 sessions
  • 10,000 new sessions/second
  • VPN throughput of 200 Mbps
  • VPN tunnel capacity of 2,000

FortiGate 800 Built on Groundbreaking Architecture

FortiGate Antivirus Firewalls are based on a groundbreaking architecture designed specifically to deliver application-layer security and content processing services, in addition to network-layer services, in real time. The FortiGate 800 provides all of the features found on the other 10 members of the FortiGate family, including:
  • ICSA Certified Firewall
  • ICSA Certified IPSec VPN
  • ICSA Certified Antivirus Protection
  • ICSA Certified Network Intrusion Detection (NIDS)
  • Intrusion Prevention
  • Web Content Filtering
  • Email Content Filtering

All models in the FortiGate product family employ Fortinet's unique FortiASIC(TM) content processing chip and the powerful, secure, FortiOS(TM) operating system to achieve breakthrough price/performance. The unique, ASIC-based architecture analyzes content and behavior in real time, and delivers a combination of services and performance that cannot be matched using conventional layer 3/layer 4 networking architectures, or by deploying software applications on conventional computer systems.

FortiGate 800 systems, like all FortiGate Antivirus Firewalls, are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiResponse Network, which provides continuous updates to ensure protection against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats -- around the clock, and around the world.

"The FortiGate 800 offers enterprise customers an attractive, future-proof investment that integrates easily in existing networks and supports the accelerating shift to Gigabit networks," said Richard Kagan, Fortinet's vice president of marketing. "With the introduction of the FortiGate 800, Fortinet continues to deliver on our promise to provide the highest performance, most secure solutions with the lowest total cost of ownership."

    Distribution and Availability

The FortiGate 800 will be available in Q1 2004 via Fortinet's global network of authorized distributors and resellers.
